Audience
The course is designed for workers involved in lifting operations, including slingers and riggers, signalers, crane operators and others who work with lifting equipment in construction, building, industry, workshops and transportation. It is suitable for both new and experienced personnel and covers the theoretical part of documented safety training in accordance with current requirements. The course is also relevant for supervisors, HSE managers and employers who need insight into the safe execution and follow up of lifting operations.

Learning objectives
The course provides participants with a thorough and practical understanding of safe slinging, rigging and communication during lifting operations. It lays the foundation for the safe use of lifting equipment, sound risk assessments and effective cooperation between all involved roles. The theory prepares participants for the practical training that is carried out within the company.

After completing the course you will be able to

  • Explain relevant legislation and the requirements for documented training in lifting operations
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of the slinger and rigger, signaller, crane operator and employer
  • Identify hazards and carry out safe job analysis prior to lifting operations
  • Select appropriate lifting equipment and calculate load weight, angles and capacity based on load characteristics
  • Inspect chains, fiber slings, wire ropes, hooks and shackles before use
  • Perform correct slinging and rigging to ensure a stable and balanced load
  • Use hand signals and radio communication clearly and safely
  • Monitor and secure the lifting area to prevent hazardous situations
  • Handle deviations and report faults, near misses and equipment damage
  • Contribute to a systematic safety culture through good practices and proper documentation

Important to note
This course covers the theoretical part of documented safety training in slinging and rigging. To complete the training, the company must also carry out practical training in the workplace, where the participant practices the selection of lifting equipment, pre use inspection, load securing, slinging, signaling and safe execution using the company’s own equipment. The practical training must be led by a qualified instructor or supervisor who evaluates and approves that the participant has mastered the tasks before he or she takes part independently in lifting operations.

The company must also ensure written documentation of both theoretical and practical training in its training or HSE system, and establish and follow procedures for inspection, maintenance and deviation management. The course does not include certified training for lifting operations that require certification, and such requirements must be met through approved certified training programs.
