Topic page for certification courses in hot works.
Hot works involve increased fire risk and require documented expertise. On this topic page you will get answers to who needs certification in hot works, why, and how you can conduct theoretical test and extinguishing exercise.
Work involving the use of open flame, heat or sparks entails an increased risk of fire. Heat works are therefore a certification scheme established by the Fire Protection Association, and is a requirement of insurance companies when such work is carried out on construction sites, in industry, on roofs, in workshops and in maintenance.
Compend delivers both theoretical courses and extinguishing exercises in collaboration with Granlund Competence, which is certified by the Fire Protection Association. The course in hot works provides you with proven expertise in fire prevention, risk assessment and proper handling of fire inflows. The certificate is valid for 5 years.

Anyone who performs, supervises or is responsible for work that may entail a fire hazard must have a valid certificate. This applies, among others, to roofers, plumbers, welders, sheet metal workers, electricians, operations personnel and managers in charge of such work.
How is the course structured?
The course in hot work consists of two compulsory parts, both of which must be completed and documented in order for a certificate to be issued.
1. Theoretical part and test
The theoretical part is conducted as e-learning. Here, among other things, you will learn about
• regulations and insurance requirements
• fire theory and common causes of fire in hot works
• risk assessment and preventive measures
• responsibilities, roles and secure job analysis
E-learning ends with a theoretical test. Passing the test is a requirement to advance in the certification race.
2. Practical extinguishing exercise
In addition to theory and test, all course participants must complete a practical extinguishing exercise. The purpose is to ensure that you master basic skills in extinguishing small fires.
The extinguishing exercise can be conducted as
• sharp exercise with real extinguishers
• digital extinguishing exercise with VR extinguishing simulator approved by the Danish Fire Protection Association
Each participant shall extinguish a fire at least twice and practice the correct use of extinguishing equipment and extinguishing techniques.
Extinguishing exercise on VR can be purchased through our approved partners.
After completing the theory part, it is the participant's responsibility to ensure that practical extinguishing exercise is carried out in accordance with applicable requirements.
It means that
• the extinguishing exercise must be carried out by an approved or qualified instructor
• the exercise must meet the requirements of the scheme “Fire protection when performing hot works”
• Self-declaration is not allowed
The extinguishing exercise can be carried out by
• approved instructor in hot works
• employee of the fire department with relevant expertise
• other qualified person with proven expertise in practical extinguishing

In order for a certificate to be issued, valid documentation of the practical extinguishing exercise carried out must be submitted. You can do this in the form below.
The documentation must contain
• name and date of birth of the course participant
• the date and place of the extinguishing exercise
• Name, role and signature of instructor
• description of the implementation
• what extinguishing agents and form of exercise are used
We recommend using Fire Protection Association Standard Form for confirmation of completed practical extinguishing exercise.
Theoretical courses and practical extinguishing exercises must be completed within three months. Certificate cannot be issued until both parts are completed and documented.
When do you get the certificate?
Once we have received and checked the passing theoretical test and valid documentation on practical extinguishing exercise, the certificate in hot works will be issued and registered with the Fire Protection Association. You will receive an SMS from the Fire Protection Association when your certificate is ready for download.
